Taught by nobody
Yue Heng was born in 1977 in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, China. He has loved art, fine arts, Chinese calligraphy and seal carving since childhood — and had none of it taught to him. There was no formal schooling and no art training: he dropped out of junior high school, worked a run of different jobs, and only then began teaching himself to paint, and after that to tattoo.
In 2003 he founded his own tattoo art studio, Yueyang Newassassin Tattoo.
In 2005 he became the owner of Baidu Tattoo, China's largest online tattoo community, with over one million registered members — a platform that played a crucial role in the rapid development and the promotion of modern tattooing in China.
For more than twenty years since, he has been dedicated to the innovation and development of his own work and to the proper promotion of tattoo culture. He has over 1,000 direct disciples worldwide.

Tattooing has a history of thousands of years in Chinese culture, and reached its peak during the Song Dynasty — by then there were already gatherings and organisations dedicated to it.

Among all the documents and historical records in China, the most famous tattoo story is that of Yue Fei's mother tattooing words on his back. Yue Fei was a national hero of the Song Dynasty, and his mother put those four characters on him to express his aspirations.
Yue Heng is the 32nd generation descendant of Yue Fei — and one of the first modern tattoo artists in China.
Method
Freehand,
every time
His work is primarily freehand — drawn onto the person, not printed from a stencil the night before.
It starts with a detailed conversation on site. He reads the client's temperament, body type, physique and muscle structure, and takes the elements they want in the piece. Only then does he draw, by hand, directly on the body.
The result is a tattoo that fits one person and could not be moved onto anybody else — which is the whole point of working this way, and the thing the seminar is really about.
